In addition to M-Systems and SanDisk, about a half dozens vendors, including Kingston Technology, Memorex, and Verbatim, have announced U3 driveways.

Running applications from the USB drive means, in essence, your entire computer productivity may be handled strictly from your thumb drive itself, says veteran technology consultant Tim Bajarin, who predicts that by the beginning of 2007 more than 50 % USB drives will cruise ship with bundled software.

A drives capacity will probably, of course, limit its ability to place applications and data. Most of the first U3 devices being released are 512MB or 1GB versions priced between $42 along with $100; currently only Memorex delivers 256MB ($30) along with 2GB ($180) memory sticks.
